Keystone Male Head,
The Miser

This keystone male head is after an original 18th century ‘Coade’ keystone, which was said to be based on the character of Harpagon from ‘The Miser’, a five-act comedy in prose by the French playwright Molière. First performed in 1668, loosely based on the Latin comedy Aulularia by Plautus. This was adapted by Thomas Shadwell in 1672 and Henry Fielding in 1732. The ‘Coade’ sculptors would have been inspired by the contemporary adaptations of the play and modelled the keystone in the publicity pictures of the day.
