Bowood Urns
Bowood House and Gardens, a Georgian residence situated in the Wiltshire countryside, has been the home of the Petty-Maurice family since 1754.
Originally placed in the Mausoleum niches in the parkland, these two Coade vases were acquired in the 1760s. They were later relocated in the 1970s to the main entrance for the house.
These early Coade pieces needed extensive restoration. The original iron dowel connecting the vase to its base had rusted causing the base to break apart. We replaced the rusted dowel with a stainless steel one in order to restore their structural integrity. There were also missing elements, such as two lion masks and foliate turnovers, which we recreated.
The vases underwent thorough cleaning to remove layers of paint deposits and other substances before cracks were filled, and missing components were restored. Once restored the vases were returned to Bowood, where they have be placed atop two cylindrical stone plinths inside the doors.
