Cistern & Dolphin Spitter
Cistern & Dolphin Spitter
Based on a Roman 3rd century A.D. strigillated sarcophagus with lions, which can be seen today at the Neus Museum, Berlin.
The dolphin spitter is inspired by Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s dolphins on the Fontana del Tritone, 1642-3, in Rome.
The sculptured relief lions on the rounded ends of the sarcophagus were originally designed as symbols of death and the victory over death.
